Court Jesters, peasants, heralds and more are gathering for a medieval meal in Madison Thursday, February 26th to complete the Renaissance Days and Medieval (K)Nights festival.
Students from North Florida Community College and local volunteers transformed the Women's Club into a Renaissance wonderland. Art students created stained-glass windows and tapestries. Music and theater students will be performing, and an authentic,
multi-course meal will be served.
"Our president is a medievalist. I am a medievalist. Our music professor is a medievalist, and so one time we were talking in my office, and we decided it would be fun to have a medieval institute," said Barbara McCauley, NFCC English Instructor.
"It's been a lot of fun. It's taught me a lot about planning and how to improvise on things that I need to do with my art, and it has just taught us a lot about history," added Samantha Lucas, NFCC Art Club President.
The event is sold out this year, but organizers are already planning for the next event in February 2010.

What I recall from history lessons in school was that this period after the "Dark Ages" in Europe was not so magical. Birth mortality was very high, average adult age was about 42-45. Most females were giving birth and raising families before age 18. The majority of people were servants, serfs and peasants who could own nothing but the clothes (rags) they wore and spent their life in servatude to the King, Prince or Lord. How authenic will this meal be? There was no refrigeration then, so meats were salted or smoked and left hanging in the open. Maggots and rotted portions may have been trimmed before cooking. Water was not always safe to drink -thats why beer (ale) became popular. There were fewer people having bowel disease since the alcohol would kill bad bacteria. Porridge would certainly have had weevils and mealbugs in it and bread would always have mold. So hail to your Hind@22 the King - eat, drink & be merry !
