Gifted Task Force Meets for the First Time
Budget cuts have forced the Leon County School District to close the Academic Resource Center, a program for gifted students. Now the community has come together to make sure future students don't suffer from the loss.

In February, Superintendent Jackie Pons laid out a plan that cuts $12 million out of the budget for the 2009-2010 school year.
On the chopping block is the Academic Resource Center, known as the ARC, for gifted students.
That's why the district has formed a Gifted Task Force to look at other options for gifted students.
And Friday, March 27th, the group met for the first time. It's made up of students, teachers, administrators, and citizens. Their goal is to come up with recommendations for the District regarding elementary program options for the upcoming year.
"Our gifted students are entitled to these kinds of services and we want to make sure that we provide a well rounded education for them and the enhancements that these students need," said Barbara Wills, the Assistant Superintendent.
The group has four more meetings on the schedule and Wills encourages the public to come and give their input.
The ARC was a centralized location where elementary students would to to receive enrichment activities. The Gifted Task Force hopes to give the Superintendent their recommendations on Tuesday May 12th, at the school board meeting.
Schedule of Committee Meetings:
Thursday, April 9th from 4pm to 5pm at the Academic Resource Center
Monday, April 20th from 6pm to 7pm at Buck Lake Elementary
Thursday, April 30th from 6pm to 7pm at Ruediger Elementary
Tuesday, May 5th from 6pm to 7pm at Gilchrist Elementary

This needs to be more widely promoted to the parents of Leon County children receiving gifted services. I have a child at ARC and knew nothing about these meetings until now. At least there are two more.
Parents are advised to read the Fordham study titled High achievers in an Era of NCLB. Rather than downgrading your children's services, make them better. Parents are also advised to obtain the OPPAGA report on gifted where lack of financial tracking is described.
