FCAT Protesters Swarm Governor's Office, Chant and Pray

The protesters waited for nearly two hours before the governor agreed to talk with them. Led by Miami Senator Frederica Wilson, they chanted "Where is Bush?'' when the governor did not meet with them initially.

Senator Wilson was joined by about two dozen parents and children from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. They boarded a bus in Miami last night at 11:30 and drove all night in the hopes of confronting the governor on the FCAT policy.

The protesters joined hands and prayed together as they waited for the governor. Then they sang spirituals in an effort to get the governor's attention.

Bush eventually met with the protesters in a conference room. He told them FCAT is not the sole test used to determine whether third graders can pass on to the next grade.

Bush said local teachers and principals can look at a student's whole portfolio of work to measure if they can read at grade level.
