9/29/06 - The alleged victim is back on the stand testifying against Florida A&M University fraternity brothers accused of hazing.
The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brothers are accused of beating Marcus Jones with canes and boxing gloves to the point that he suffered a perforated eardrum and needed surgery on his buttocks. The fifth defendant allegedly participated by encouraging Jones and other candidates to bear up under the beatings while reviving them with water if they passed out.
In court yesterday, Jones' father said he has hired a civil law firm but that he did it because he wanted the attorneys to help him deal with the news media.
Army Master Sergeant Mark Jones, Jr. is himself a founding member of the Kappa Alpha Psi chapter at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Florida's new hazing law makes it a felony to cause serious bodily damage or death. Penalties can range from probation to five years in prison. The law, though, does not define serious bodily injury.
