Florida Said to Be Winning War on Crime

Thursday in Tallahassee, Jim McDonough honored members of Florida's "Violent Crime and Drug Control Council'' at the Capitol.

The council's job is to develop ideas to combat violent crime and drug trafficking.

McDonough says the group has helped dismantle Florida's major drug trafficking organizations.

Gov. Jeb Bush told the gathering that the 75 million people coming to the state each year and the more than 16 million who live here can't pursue their dreams unless their fears are put to rest.

Since its creation in 1993, the Violent Crime and Drug Control Council has spent about $8 million fighting crime.

Gov. Bush calls that a good investment because public safety is the state's most important issue and violent crime has been reduced to historic lows.
