Campaign 2006: Davis at FSU to Talk Education

Congressman Jim Davis spoke at Florida State University in Tallahassee where he and Virginia Sen. John Warner emphasized education.

Davis is in favor of a $4,000-a-year pay raise for teachers. He also pledges to stop using the FCAT exam to grade schools and students. He says it should be used as a diagnostic tool to help kids instead of using it to fail them.

"Once you’ve identified a child is struggling, what is the problem and how do you fix it? If all you do it test, you’re not accomplishing anything," Davis said. "And as a parent, if one of my boys is struggling, if any child is struggling, we owe it to them to find out what the problem is and fix it."

Republican candidate Charlie Crist takes the opposite approach. He wants to continue using the FCAT to grade schools and students and promises to continue using Jeb Bush’s education model.
