Solid Waste Site Dispute in Thomasville

Neighbors called the site "unsightly and abused", but not everyone is happy that those dumpsters are gone. For two years now, people who live near the intersection of 319 and Springhill Road have dealt with an eyesore right up the street. That's when even more drivers on the highway came across this solid waste site on their way into Thomasville.

"We had a lot of abuse. We had furniture and other stuff left there that shouldn't have been left there, it was a constant problem," says Mike Stephenson, Thomas County Manager.

Last week, the site closed down. Now the nearest solid waste disposal site is at the intersection of Magnolia and Metcalfe Roads several miles away.

"But county officials don't encourage people to dump their garbage here, they say this site sees far too much use as it is, and talks are in progress with the city to find a better site to suit everyone."

"I feel a solution will be made. A lot of people are upset that it closed, a lot are going to be glad, but I feel they'll work out a solution," says resident Dee Dee Mediate.

County officials say they're not wasting any time. They hope to choose a new site within months. Rose City residents are encouraged to use the disposal site on Sunset Drive near the landfill. County leaders are meeting right now to discuss the topic at the Thomas County Courthouse.
