The department’s Division of Forestry is unveiling an effort to ensure that people who own small tracts of forest land do not sell out to development.
The division will provide technical and other assistance so small landowners can better manage their land.
"If they don't manage, we're not going to have healthy forest situations," said Florida Division of Forestry Director Mike Long. "And with all the pressure of development and other land uses, having good, healthy forest is critical to the state's future."
Long says helping smaller landowners is important with so much forest land getting developed as land values continue to skyrocket.
