The call for help was sent out and area residents answered one can at a time.
In the last couple of days, America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend has brought in more than 50,000 pounds of food. Officials attribute the surge in donations to a rise in the number of food drives.
In the last couple of weeks, nearly 6,000 canned goods have come in, more than 2,000 of those from one donation alone. Thanks to those gifts Echo was able to give away 100 Thanksgiving baskets complete with all the trimmings.
Echo and Big Bend volunteers hope come Christmas, residents will once again lend a helping hand. Both Echo and Second Harvest of the Big Bend volunteers say this Thanksgiving, donations have been at an all time high.
