Tallahassee Marine Killed in Iraq

The Department of Defense says Pfc. Daniel Chaires of Tallahassee was killed in Iraq Wednesday.

The Leon County and state flags are flying at half-staff in honor of the 20-year-old Marine. The DOD says he was killed in combat operations in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq while serving with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Friends of the Chaires family tell WCTV Daniel had only been serving in Iraq for about five to six weeks, recently completing basic training in Hawaii. They also say funeral services are scheduled for next week.

The Department of Defense says Chaires joined the Marine Corps September 2005 and reported to Hawaii in March of 2006. His awards include the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. D.O.D. officials say was also in line for promotion to Lance Corporal on the first of November.

October is now marked as the deadliest month this year for American servicemen in Iraq. Eyewitness News will be following this story.
