Labor Day Weekend Traffic Fatality Totals for Florida

Florida Highway Patrol, FHP, estimated the number of driving fatalities to be 32, but this year, the number of deaths was 24.

FHP says even one death is still a tragedy, but the low number makes them hopeful that the message to not drink and drive is really hitting home.

In Leon County, there were DUI checks to start the Labor Day weekend. And the one death over the holiday weekend, in Leon, was not alcohol related.

All together for the state there were 24 deaths in 22 separate accidents. Only three were known to be alcohol related.

FHP says they are going to continue to seek out drunk drivers. Of the 24 fatalities, five people were not wearing their seatbelt.
