UNDATED (AP) - School officials say a University of Miami player was shot and killed Tuesday, shortly after leaving the practice field.
The circumstances around defensive end Bryan Pata's death are not clear, and Miami-Dade police won't say what happened.
Pata, a graduate of Miami Central, was in his fourth year with the Hurricanes. He appeared in 41 games, making 23 starts, and was expected to be selected in next spring's NFL draft.
It was at least the fourth time that tragedy involving a player has struck the Hurricanes in recent years.
Pata's death was the second fatality involving guns this season for the Hurricanes.
Miami coach Larry Coker later said he didn't want his players to have guns, even if they had them legally.
