(AP) - A Florida woman has pleaded not guilty to charges she used a federal program to help poor mothers steal hundreds of thousands of dollars while she worked at a New York hospital.

Carol Peirce, of Port St. Lucie, entered the plea in Manhattan federal court.

Charges stem from when she was the director at the Women, Infants and Children Program at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Peirce is free on $250,000 bail.

At a bail hearing, a federal prosecutor said Peirce had skimmed money from the program, which supplies milk and baby cereal to mothers and children. The prosecutor also claims Peirce used the program's credit card to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of items and services for herself.

Peirce is now an executive for the Palm Beach County Health Department.
