Tallahassee City Budget Hearing

Several speakers asked commissioners to provide more money for public transport. The city's budget for next year saves $120,000 by eliminating the downtown trolley.

Many speakers addressed another issue, the proposed half-mill property tax increase.

"I am not rich, but I do recognize it's important to have city services for everyone in our community, and I am willing to pay for that."

"Government has the unique ability to say, "This is what we want to spend. Come up with it, taxpayers.' And that's what we're against."

The planned increase would cost the owner of a $150,000 home another $63 a year in property taxes. City commissioners will hold another hearing September 24 before they vote on the budget.
