Could lower taxes be in store this year for residents of Cairo? The city is one step closer to setting its millage rate.
The City Council approved a property tax rate of 7.9 mils, lower than last year's almost 8.5. The new millage rate is just a proposal right now. The council will make a final decision in a meeting December 14, but city officials say they are looking out for the residents.
Interim City Manager Tom Berry said, "The city council has decided they don't want to increase taxes, they know folks feel like they pay enough taxes."
This tax does not include county or school taxes, which Cairo residents will know more about after the December meeting.
