University Presidents Call for Repeal of Early Graduation Law

Godby High School principal Randy Pridgeon is agreeing with Florida's university presidents, saying a law to allow students to graduate one year early is a bad idea.

He says most students are not ready emotionally or academically. The law was passed last year by the legislature. Now, university presidents and the Board of Governors, which oversees the state's public universities, are vowing to overhaul the law.

State Rep. Curtis Richardson who opposed the law from the start is surprised. The early graduation option came about as lawmakers tried to reduce class sizes to comply with the class size amendment.

The Board of Governors is also thinking along those lines. It has voted to ask the legislature to authorize a referendum to repeal the constitutional amendment to reduce class sizes.
