Meals on Wheels Deliveries

Seniors living on a fixed budget face challenges every day, from paying the utility bill to buying prescription drugs and sometimes not much is left over for the staple of life, food.
Many of us have heard of Meals on Wheels, but you may not know just how important this program is to our area.

Every day Alice Hayes waits for a knock on her door, a knock that brings healthy meals right to her kitchen. Meals on Wheels for her means independence and allows her to stay home.

"This is my own little home I've been here over 50 something years. I've been here 50 something years, I clean up myself," says Alice.

Alice got a special treat Monday morning. Her food was delivered by state Rep. Curtis Richardson.

"Without this our seniors are forced to eat whatever they can get and so we want to provide them with nutritious meals and to be able to keep them in their homes so that they can live as independently as possible for as long as possible," says Rep. Curtis Richardson.

For the Meals on Wheels program, Monday was a day to showcase the needs of seniors using local dignitaries to spread the word.

"We have them come out so they can see individuals that they would normally not get the opportunity to see in the community and see the need of seniors."

Leon County sheriff Larry Campbell also made the rounds, delivering meals on the west side of Tallahassee.

"You meet people that you don't know. You're helping people in need. You're helping improve the quality of life in the city and the county that we love," says sheriff Larry Campbell.

Meals on Wheels needs about 30 volunteers every day to make deliveries. If you can help call 921-5554. If you can't volunteer to deliver you can head out this Friday to Dorothy B. Oven Park Oktoberfest; there will be German beer, food and music. All the proceeds benefit the Elder Care Services.
