Senior Housing Project in Wakulla County

Plans are underway to build a 40-50 unit assisted living facility in Wakulla County. The goal is to house those who can no longer live alone while creating a senior friendly community.

Music doesn't only fill the halls; it fills the hearts and minds of these seniors. Since its grand opening 18 months ago, the Wakulla County Senior Center has been jam-packed. The healthy happy seniors are thriving in this rural county. Some live independently, but the large majority relies on family for help.

Alice Harrison is talking about a proposed assisted living facility, a project being considered by Wakulla County commissioners that's in high demand with these seniors because assisted living offers more independence than a nursing home at a cheaper rate, plus this facility would be a quick stroll away from the senior center.

The ball is in the county commissioners' hands. They will address the issue at next Monday's county commission meeting. Most rural counties don't have assisted living because of the high cost, but Wakulla County has a senior citizen council that is non-profit and can help acquire funds needed to build the facility. The council is trying to obtain a $500,000 pre-development loan to get the project started.
