DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - School officials are awaiting a report from the medical examiner's office to determine why a 14-year-old fell and died during a basketball game at Bethune Middle School in Decatur.
Joshua Thomas, a player for Shamrock Middle School, was knocked unconscious after hitting his head on the floor during the game Saturday and stopped breathing. Several medical professionals were at the game. DeKalb County schools spokesman Dale Davis says they started CPR on the boy.
He was pronounced dead about 1:30 p.m. at DeKalb Medical Center at Hillandale.
Davis says he does not know whether the boy just collapsed or fell due to a foul during the game.
Extra school counselors will be on hand today.
