Crews are working hard to install this new smardt chiller at Leon High School.

The chiller is essentially an advanced air conditioning unit. Not only is it energy efficient, by reducing carbon emissions by 125 tons a year, but it saves money too.

"When you think you can save a $1,000.00 to $1,500 a month in your utility bill by using something that's more energy efficient, it's not only important to our students, but it's important to our community," said Leon County Superintendent Jackie Pons.

The energy director for Leon County schools says since Superintendent Pons took over in 2006 the district has decreased it's energy consumption by nearly 10%.

"Oil free is the future. So this is sort of leading the future and I think oil free will become a more standard product," said Ron Conry, with Danfoss Turbocor Compressors Inc.

And even better, this chiller is made in Tallahassee at Innovation Park.
The chiller should be completely installed by the end of next week. School officials say the old chiller needed repairs, so that's why this new advanced one was installed. The new compressor has a 20% greater life expectancy compared to others.
