Governor Crist and Higher Education

Now that Crist has taken the oath, those in the academic world are waiting to see what impact the new administration will have on higher education.

Right now, many Florida public universities are dealing with student overcrowding.

The state university system expects an additional 50,000 students by the year 2012, and will need another 14 million gross square feet of facilities at an estimated cost of $3.4 billion.

“I'm hoping that there will be a renewed emphasis on the state university system and our community college system. That has been neglected, for the most part, over these past eight years," said Florida Rep. Curtis Richardson.

Florida currently has 11 public universities with more than 280,000 students.
