A walk with the family dog turned into a nightmare Thursday morning as a man was struck and killed by a train.
Tallahassee police say a couple was walking its dog along the train tracks on the back side of Tom Brown Park when they heard the train whistle.
Police say the girlfriend and the dog went one way and the man went the other, but apparently the dog was not on a leash and in the confusion that followed, the man tried to get across the trestle and down the embankment, but didn't make it. Police say he was struck in the back by the passing train and killed.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Tallahassee police have not yet released the man's name. The girlfriend and the dog survived the close call. The train stopped farther down the tracks and wasn't visible from the scene.
