It's not known for its parks, but thanks to some recent revamps and development, Jefferson County can at least keep residents from going elsewhere for entertainment.
"People in Jefferson County, I think if we can have parks and a park system to use, then they don't have to travel great distances to enjoy stuff like that," said Henry Gohlke, the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Director.
The recreational sports park was recently repainted and manicured to be more user friendly and a brand new horse arena is open for riders in the area. But the most anticipated park deal is in the works.
"We want to basically leave it in it's natural state and maybe put a boardwalk down there. Restroom facilities and a bath house so people can shower off after they canoe and stuff along those lines. But basically we want to leave it in it's natural state as much as possible," added Gohlke.
Local folks are delighted that the Wacissa River is the future site of a new park.
"That would be a dream come true! I did not realize there was no place to swim for public people in the county when we moved here. It would be wonderful to have a place where we could go and play in the water and swim and be safe and enjoy the natural surroundings we have in the county," said Tammy Brookins, who is a fan of putting a park at the head of the Wacissa River.
A committee is currently drafting plans for the Wacissa park and if all goes according to plan, local folks will be making a splash this time next year.
