Folks in the Tallahassee area jump-started the celebration Wednesday. The tribute kicks off the beginning of many events taking place throughout the week.

Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor invited community leaders to the courthouse for a special program honoring Doctor King and his work.

Opening and closing prayers, excerpts from some of King's speeches and a musical selection all set the tone for the event.

The theme of the tribute is "Education Matters."

April McCray is a student at Covenant Preparatory Academy and said, "Now I know what I wanna do with life, and I am not afraid to tell anyone how I feel about my heritage, black people, and about Martin Luther King."

Also at the celebration, awards for leadership in the community were given out to some residents, as well as an award given to the keynote speaker, Florida Sen. Al Lawson.
