A Tallahassee postal worker has been fired, accused of delivering the mail to a dumpster.

The U.S. Postal Service says a passerby noticed the employee throwing more than 500 pieces of mail into the trash.

The Post Office immediately retrieved the mail and fired the postman.

Once the investigation is complete the mail will be delivered to its final destination.

"We are offended by the action of this employee. Postal carriers have a proud tradition of delivering over 682 million pieces of mail a day. It's an entrusted public servant for the American public and action is being taken," said Marlena Hopkins with the U.S. Postal Service.

Tampering with mail is a federal offense. Each count is punishable by up to five years behind bars.
