Tobacco Prevention Programs

The potential of a Senate investigation into the sunshine state's under funded tobacco programs has Florida leaders defending the legislature's spending decisions.

A national report says Florida is among the worst examples of misspending money meant for anti-tobacco efforts. United States Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, has asked for hearings into the matter.

The report was funded by four national anti-smoking groups and it says Florida spends one million dollars a year on tobacco-prevention programs, though it receives 840 million dollars a year under a 1997 settlement with the tobacco industry.
