FSU Students Practice Community Medicine

Over the next three weeks, the aspiring physicians will be examining a whole new environment.

Taking a patient's blood pressure is nothing new for third year FSU med student Lorna Fedelem, but learning the ins-and-outs of a local agency is a new assignment.

For the next three weeks, Lorna will be doing clinical rotations at the Tallahassee Senior Center.

“Getting an idea of how local agencies operate will allow me to tell patient, ‘hey you should go to the senior center,’ they have exercise classes, things that will benefit their overall health,” said FSU student Lorna Fedelem.

Carol Bliss says she's thankful med students are taking the time to understand the older population.

“It’s one of the reasons I changed doctors. He just wasn't keyed into what we needed,” said carol.

While learning about everything from funding to daily activities, Senior Center staff say the face-to-face interaction is a great teacher.

“They have a lot to tell you about the hurdles they go through each day,” said Dale Robinson.

Big Bend Hospice, Children's Home Society and the Leon County Health Department are also taking in FSU med students.
