The nearly $700,000 portion of the project is set to get underway February 5 and be completed in June.
Airport officials say big things are coming for the airport and the community as a whole.
"Whether it be commercial flights, someday, not right away. Cargo aircraft flights things like that that require longer runways," said airport manager Bob Holliway.
"We've reached metropolitan status and I think with that comes a lot of added responsibility just to kind of branch out more as a city, and we have a lot of people coming here, so I think it will be great," added Valdosta resident John Delaney.
The longer runway will enable Valdosta Regional to assist Moody Air Force Base with their larger air craft.
