For the first time ever, Florida State fans will be able to experience an aviation flyover that has never been done before on campus.
The story of Captain Scott Speicher has spread throughout the United States over the past several decades.
Now, a new chapter, a tribute to his life, is just days away from being written.
For now, the stands of Doak Campbell Stadium are empty, but in just a few short days, thousands of fans will pour-in to watch as Florida State Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes battle it out on the gridiron.
But more than just the first game of the season, Monday will represent a first for the University, as Four F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft will fly-over the stadium, performing both a solemn and symbolic tribute called the "missing man formation."
"As the aircraft enter the stadium, one of the aircraft will actually pull up and actually fly straight into the heavens."
Chuck Morris says Florida State had to receive approval not only from the FAA and the Navy, but also from the Pentagon before it was given the go ahead to make the tribute to Speicher a reality.
Typically, this very prestigious aerial salute to a fallen airman is performed at funerals and memorials, not sporting events, but that, of course will change, come Monday night.
University officials say the Speicher family will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony just a few minutes before the flyover.
The family says they are very humbled to be included in the celebration.
The Speicher's released this statement:
"Throughout the years, Florida State University has continued to be the gold standard for honoring fallen heroes from the Seminole family. How they have honored US NAVY Captain Scott Speicher from the beginning, over 18 years ago, to the end, has been truly remarkable. What Florida State has done and meant to the Speicher-Harris family is not only inspiring, but has forever made the Seminole family a permanent part of each one of us. We are humbled to be included in the celebration of such an incredible man, done by such a magnificent University. God bless Scott Speicher, and the entire Seminole family."
Officials say 7:50 P.M. is a good time to be in place in order to catch it because the four aircraft will fly North to South over the stadium just as the last note of the national anthem is played by the Marching Chiefs.
