Suwannee River Water Management Press Release:

LIVE OAK, FL, Sept. 2, 2009 –

Hunters and others who usually access Mallory Swamp at its east gate will have to travel a few more miles to enter the tract.

The east entrance, located on SE Bethel Walker Creek Road off of SR 349 in Lafayette County, is temporarily closed due to recent rainfall.

Visitors to the property may use the main entrance on Crapps Tower Road off CR 360 south of Mayo.

Bob Heeke, senior land resource manager for Suwannee River Water Management District (District), said the east entrance is in a low-lying area and is closed periodically due to heavy rainfall.
Officials are working to get the entrance back open as soon as possible.

Mallory Swamp, a 31,321-acre tract, is owned and managed by the District. The property provides numerous recreational opportunities to the public including fishing, hiking, biking, hunting, horseback riding and ATV riding.

The real story on this was that there was a savage attack on one of our wildlife officers by a skunk ape and now they are conducting a search and capture mission. A controlled burn will follow if they cant force the animal out of the swamp.
