The world's largest retailer is about to make a big impact on the small town of Perry. A Wal-Mart Supercenter in Taylor County will bring 400 new jobs to the community.
Wal-Mart started taking applications Monday from literally hundreds of prospective associates. There's no mistaking what this building is a brand new Wal-Mart Supercenter with more than 200,000 square feet of retail might. This store going up on Jefferson Street in Perry means jobs and a lot of them.
"It's going to be a big impact on this community. I hear the unemployment here is pretty high, we're hiring about 400 positions so that will help them out quite a bit."
Application after application, since the new store started taking them Monday morning the flood of Wal-Mart wanabees has been almost non-stop. In fact, there were close to 400 applying in the first two hours alone.
"Hiring's going really well for a small community we had a turnout of probably 1000 people yesterday."
And it seems that everybody that walks into the hiring center at Taylor Technical Institute has their own reason for looking for employment.
"I'm looking for something part-time, I've been retired a couple of years. Just wanted to do something to get out of the house a little bit."
"Well hopefully it will be a benefit for the better. I've been looking around for a job and there aren't many in Perry as you can see. And Wal-Mart's like a new thing.
Wal-Mart will continue to take applications at Taylor Tech for the next three weeks. The construction is ahead of schedule and they plan on opening the store in March.
