Deerlake Middle School's Rima Kelly was surprised in front of her class with roses as she was awarded Leon County's "Teacher of the Year."
Kelly is described as a compassionate, energetic teacher who has taken her students to a higher level.
Kelly says she is thrilled about the award and the timing couldn't have been better.
"Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday of the year. My husband proposed on Valentine's Day, my daughter was born on Valentine's Day, and now to win this on Valentine's Day, this is the most prominent thing that's ever happened to me in my career," said Rima Kelly.
Superintendent Jackie Pons says it takes a hard working, dedicated teacher to win this award.
Pons said, "It takes an individual with special technique, one that can motivate students and teach them every day of their lives, and also have the type of learning environment in their classroom that the students look forward to coming to school every day."
Kelly has been teaching math to seventh and eighth graders for 20 years. She now goes on to represent Leon County in the statewide competition.
