Steve Gibson Trial

Police shot Steven Gibson five times that day. He survived and contends he had no choice but to run for his life.

Tallahassee police officer Derek Kidd chased Steven Gibson through the Glen Oaks apartment complex after he says he saw him striking his girlfriend during a heated argument.

Kidd testified in court Thursday that Gibson refused commands to stop, even at gunpoint, and ultimately got behind the wheel of a car and surged toward him.

OFC Derek Kidd says, "I was in fear for my life. I just knew I was fixing to get run over by this car."

Kidd fired at least two shots. Fellow OFC Tony Gant fired several more. Gibson was hit five times but managed to drive across the lawn and get away.

"Mr. Gibson was trying to get away. He wasn't running after the police. He was running away, away from the police," says Joel Remland, Defense Attorney.

Gibson's attorney tried to poke holes in the officer's story and suggested OFC Kidd's judgment may have been clouded by the shooting death of fellow OFC Dale Green just three weeks earlier.

OFC Kidd broke down on the stand after that. Fellow OFC Tony Gant took the stand Tuesday afternoon. That trial will continue Friday. We'll keep you posted on a verdict.
