Gas Prices

Most of us feel the pinch when we fill up the family car, but imagine all those businesses that have multiple vehicles on the road. Many people say they're finding it hard to afford gas at more than $1.60 a gallon, but business owners running several vehicles out a day are having an even tougher time.

As the owner of Big Bend Pest Control, Sammy Gray has a fleet of five trucks he sends out each day, trucks that guzzle gasoline when its cost is very high.

"If they keep going up like they're predicting, we're going to have to raise our prices, says Sammy Gray.

Sammy estimates he spends $1,200 to $1,400 a month on gas now. That may be more than the average motorist pays, but most say it's hitting their wallets hard.

AAA officials say the average price of gas in Florida is $1.63 a gallon. That's 13 cents more than this time last year. They say due to the rising costs of transportation and an increased demand for heating oil in the Northeast, those prices will continue to go up.

"The gas is too expensive here! It just amazes me that it's more expensive here than anywhere else. I travel through the state a lot and this is just ridiculous," says Sue Noyes.

Some people are opting to drive across the state line to Georgia where AAA rates the average price at about $1.50 a gallon for regular.

Those who buy in Florida say their pockets are running on empty. AAA officials say the highest gas prices in Florida are in Gainesville, at nearly $1.70 a gallon.
