Rash of Break-Ins

In the last four months more than 20 convenience stores have been hit, but it's how the culprits are getting in that is shocking store owners.

For ten years, Waleed Abbas has run Tony's Quick Stop on Lake Bradford Road with few problems, but on a recent winter morning he found something that sent chills down his spine.

"This is something don't think people will bust through the wall. You expect them to come through the windows and doors, but not concrete," says Waleed.

Tony's is one of more than 20 convenience stores across north Florida and south Georgia targeted by a band of burglars since last October.

Authorities say the bandits smash their way through brick and mortar, and then sever the phone and alarm lines. Leon County deputies say solving the string of safecracking is proving to be a tedious task.

As for Waleed, he's covered the wall the burglars used to get in, and now he's just trying to cover his losses. Leon County deputies say the burglaries happen once the store closes down for the night, and investigators believe at least two people are involved.

They ask anyone with any information to call the Leon County Sheriff’s Office at 922-3300.

Investigators say four of the more than 20 robberies happened at stores in the Tallahassee-Leon County area; the others stretch from Gadsden County to Columbia County all the way to Moultrie, Georgia.
