Coordinators of an outreach program say they're ready to hand out prepaid college scholarships.
Twelve-year-old Laverne Williams says she needs a mentor, someone outside of her daily routine to encourage her.
“You see your family everyday, but someone who goes out of their way to see you is special,” says Laverne.
For Laverne and many other area children, a mentor would also mean TCC could grant them a prepaid scholarship.
“In order to obtain this scholarship, it requires one hour a week during school,” says Craig Fletcher of the TCC Outreach Program
Although 80 local school children are already partnered up and in the scholarship program, Fletcher says there are many children waiting in the wings.
Laverne Robinson, now a student at TCC, says without the scholarship and mentor, college would most likely not have happened.
“It plays a great deal, sometime, even now here I feel like giving up, but somebody is there to push you,” says Veronda Robinson
