An academic search committee spent weeks finding out what makes Florida State the university that it is.

FSU's next president will be charged with guiding the university to the next level of research, teaching and service.

"the real commitment to growing the university and I think the determination Florida State has to do the most with what it has is very impressive and will be attractive to candidates," says John Hicks, senior consultant for Academic Search Inc.

At the board of trustees meeting Thursday morning, they announced a list of qualifications they hope the next president of Florida State University will have.

Among the qualifications are a staunch commitment to academic excellence, ability to plant and project a sense of optimism for FSU's future, and appreciation and understanding of all facets of a renowned intercollegiate athletics program.

"We're I think very well positioned for the right president to come in with the foundation that T.K. has laid with the help of the faculty, and the administration to have Florida State really take off," says Jim Smith, chair on the board of trustees.

Several schools across the country will begin a presidential search in the spring. And because of this unusual timing, it may be harder to find someone who can start right away.

Although the committee would like to recommend a candidate by January, members say they won't sacrifice quality for time.

A school profile will be put on FSU's website next week so potential candidates can find out more information about the university,
