A joyous celebration at Maclay Gardens Saturday as hundreds turned out to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago Louise Maclay, the wife of Alfred B. Maclay, donated the park to the state of Florida so it would be preserved for generations to come.
Nowadays, the park is not only visited by hundreds of thousands of guests, but is also listed on the National Register of Historic places. Local dignitaries held a celebration to honor both distinctions outside the walled garden Saturday afternoon.
The gardens are most famous for their camellias that flower around Christmas time each year. They have more than 100 varieties of the flowering plant.
