FAMU is asking that 500 to 1,000 people spend an hour a week with a child on the southside.
Wesson Elementary School has about 70 volunteers come in every week to mentor students, but with the FCAT approaching, school leaders on the southside say more assistance is needed. That's why Florida A&M University is asking for 500-1,000 mentors to step up for Black History Month, and not just in elementary schools.
FAMU Assistant Police Chief John Earst regrets waiting so long to become mentor, and his time doesn't go unnoticed.
FAMU is hoping to put 50 volunteers in every southside school from elementary to high school between February 9 and the 27th.
