Flood Warning for Ochlockonee Communities

Officials are most concerned with the high water levels in Thomasville and in Havana. Try to drive along the Ochlockonee River after almost a week straight of rain and you'll find yourself in a sticky and dangerous situation.

In Thomasville the river has already reached its flood stage, and in Havana many areas are expected to be flooded out by Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for both areas. Usually, the section of the river off Highway 19 North is packed with fishermen. Monday morning, there was no one there. The river's so flooded you can't get more than a quarter of a mile down the road.

Thomas County's environmental specialist urges that no one should be going near the riverbanks until the water levels drop.

"Watch out for any areas of the river they're not familiar with, any fast-moving currents that may be involved with the flooding," warns Hamilton Faulk.

Faulk adds the best way to stay safe right now is to stay away from the river altogether. The National Weather Service predicts the water will drop below flood level in Thomasville by 11:00 Monday night and by early Thursday morning in Havana.
