Progress has been made Monday night for the upgrading of one Leon County road, but not before some debate on spending in other areas of the blueprint project.
Monday night, officials with Blueprint 2000 made new steps in improving portions of capital circle. A design bill for Capital Circle Southeast was approved, meaning a contract will soon be awarded for that project, which is $35 million.
Additionally, a contract was awarded to develop Capital Circle from U.S. 90 to Orange Avenue. One thing which took members a step back was, of all things, was the Blueprint 2000 website and logo.
"I don't believe we ought to spend 12 or 15 thousand dollars on a Blueprint logo, that's tax payer money that should go to the projects at hand, Spending 80, 000 on a web site, that's too much,” says Leon County Commissioner Tony Grippa.
"Some members of the commission took exception to the amount of money we were spending and I just got some additional guidance to what to do. So as far as I'm concerned, there's no issue here,” says Blueprint 2000 director, Jim Davis.
Tallahassee City Commissioner Andrew Gillum says if Blueprint is to move forward board members should continue to handle money matters wisely.
"I don't think we need to find ourselves in the process of micro managing by any means. The Blueprint staff, the issues that rise to our level, need to be at our level and short of that, I think we have a significant or substantial enough staff to handle those issues," says Gillum.
Another item tossed around the table Monday was a move to award engineers’ money even if they lose on a bid. If they win a bid, say a $35 million contract, they win the contract. If they lose they're still awarded $60,000. That didn't sit well with some commissioners.
