Public transit could be coming to Wakulla County.

Right now, there's no widespread bus or van service to help folks get around, but the county *is* looking into ways to change that.

A citizen work group met this evening at the Commission Chambers to discuss what is needed, which areas should be served, and when.

County officials say there is a demand.

"Some students, they aren't going to school because they can't get to and from TCC," says Lynn Artz, a Wakulla County Commissioner. "So there's definitely a need. There are a lot of reasons to do it."

The group plans to review other public transportation systems and possible funding sources.

You can thank the previous commissions for the mess along 319. You can thank Mike Stewart for the wal-mart location (along Mike Stewart Way), which was the absolute worse place to put it. You can thank Dr. Howard Kessler, for fighting the good but losing battle to keep 319 clear of commercial development along 319. Now, the fixes are slow and expensive, when the development could have been located elsewhere. We need more thoughtful commissioners like Dr. Kessler on the board. Remember its not about stopping growth, its about having sensible growth and my commute is about 20 minutes longer than before. That's a lot of money I spend each week on gas sitting in traffic because the powers around here were helping out their buddies. Remember Mike Stewart way next election.

I agree! I wish they would put more energy into getting 319 four-laned. You can hardly get on the highway in the morning or afternoon as it is almost bumper to bumper traffic. The stop and go traffic takes you forever to get anywhere because there are few turning lanes. It appears that they are putting in more turning lanes but that is like sticking your finger in a leak in the dam.
