A Gadsden County man on trial for strangling his friend to death then burning his body is off the hook. Eyewitness News Reporter Heather Biance was in the courtroom tonight when grief turned to disbelief.

The courtroom erupted in disbelief and anger when the verdict was handed down Tuesday night as 12 jurors found 28-year-old Dearendo Harris not guilty on murder, arson and robbery charges.

Harris was on trial for the 2008 death of 17 year old Dekendric Smith. Deputies say Harris strangled him and then set a car on fire with his body inside.

It's been more than 20 months since Smith died, but as his siblings, mother and other family members told me, not a day goes by without thinking of him.

"I think about him everyday, every single day. Living through the pain and agony my family has just experienced, it's unbelievable. I can't describe to you, how we feel," says the victim's brother, Darfonza Smith.

Harris took the stand earlier in the afternoon saying he didn't kill his friend.

Prosecutor: "You weren't involved?"
Harris: "No I wasn't"

And the jury believed him, or at least couldn't say without reasonable doubt, that he didn't strangle Smith and then set the car he was in on fire.

Although River Birch Road is dark and vacant now, this was where the 1996 Chevy Caprice was found fully engulfed last February.2008

Fire officials testified that the fire was started in the backseat on the passenger side, the same location where's Smith's body was found.

Smith's family say they were looking for closure after Tuesday's verdict, but the question of who killed Dekendric and why still remains.

Harris has been at the Leon County jail since February 2008, but was released from custody after Tuesday night's verdict.

Smith's remains were found February 7th of 2008 inside of a charred car in Midway.

I am the first cousin of Dekendric Smith. Whom we affectionally called "DEE". Growing up my cousin was a sweet, quiet, well mannered loving person. Even after he got older his demeanor never changed. If you sat in the court room and listened to the evidence and the testimonies then you would understand why people say they feel like justice wasn't served. Dearendo was the person that lead my cousin to his death, if he knew that his cousin was crazy and he was suppose to be a friend og my cousin why would you leave him in that situation? No the only people that know what happen is God, my Cousin DeKendric, Dearendo, his cousin Jakivus and Teresa Young. Between these people they know what happen to my cousin. If they had any heart they would speak up! My cousin has a little girl who look just like him that will never know who her dad was and will never have a memory of him to share.

I am the third cousin of Dearendo Harris. "Dee" is what we all called him. We all grew up together I remember Dearendo as a loving person. When I first heard about the crime and who the police accused of murdering the victim I just couldn't believe it. Many people have posted their negative thoughts saying that justice was not served and that Dearendo murdered that kid all I have to say to you negative people out there is quit slandering my cousin because you don't know what really happened that day. The only people that really know what happened are The victim, Dearendo, and God. Stop believing everthing that the law enforcement tell you because the law enforcement can tell lies to. I have a message for my cousin Dee you were found not guitly so get on with your life and move forward and remember only God can judge you. To the victim family my heart goes out to you may you find peace and justice. Every one is entitled to their opinion so if anyone would like to respond I welcome you
