Coach Stabs Wife Before Killing Self

Officials say a man who was well respected in the Madison community attempted to kill his wife just before taking his own life.

Residents of the quaint town of Madison, Florida are still recovering from learning that one of their own committed an unimaginable crime.

"It's hard to understand something like that in a small town. I didn't know the man personally, but it's sad to hear this," says Fred Bartlam, a Madison resident.

"This is a great place to live and when something like this happens, it just puts a cloud over it. These are just sad times," adds Wendy Bartlam.

Tuesday night, Madison police officials discovered the body of 39-year-old Shannon Gibson lying face down in the back yard of his home at 402 Horry Street.

Officials say Gibson stabbed himself to death right after repeatedly stabbing his wife.

"He apparently had some serious personal problems going on at the time he did this that lead to the situation," says Chief Rick Davis of the Madison Police Department.

Raymond Pinkard lives directly across from Gibson's home. He says he didn't know Gibson personally, but that he and his family seemed okay.

"This is very uncommon, and a very upsetting thing to the neighborhood. Just kind of comes as a shock," says Raymond.

Gibson worked as a varsity boys basketball coach at Taylor County High School where Wednesday the flag flew at half-staff.

Wayne Dunwoody coached along side Gibson at the school and says students have been devastated all day at the news.

"I've been trying to figure out what in the world went wrong. I just think something made him click, and he just responded in a negative way and just click," says Wayne.

Gibson's wife was transported to the South Georgia Medical Center where she is currently in the intensive care unit, while Gibson's two children are in the care of family. Officials say Gibson once served as a law enforcement officer in Largo, Florida and with the Tallahassee Police Department.
