Tallahassee Plans to Reopen Cascades Park

Wednesday night a vote was taken and the park located between Monroe, Gaines and Bloxham Streets will be cleaned up and opened.

The city says the park soil is contaminated, but they have a proposed agreement with the state to start cleanup work in December.

The contamination was found in the late 1980's and the park was immediately closed.

"We've been dealing with it for about 14 years. We have an agreement with the state, DMS, DEP and the City to transfer the property back to the city so we can start the clean up. The state has agreed to help fund the clean up,” comments Jim English, attorney for the City of Tallahassee.

The cleanup plans must first be approved by the governor and the cabinet. If approved the park will be included in the Blueprint 2000 plans.

Current projected costs for cleanup exceed $5 million, but the city says it is hoping for state assistance.
