South Side Survey

A spokesman with the Tallahassee-Leon County planning department says $140,000 has been set aside for an economic development plan on the city's south side.

Part of that plan is a new online survey. Rick Fausone, Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department, said, “we need to find out from the people in that area, what they need in the way of jobs, and services and retail, and that's what we're hoping to get from this survey.”

The survey is designed to basically gather information on where the money should go. Robert Stigar, south side resident, said, “they've redone the streets, a lot of the streets are real good now. If they keep doing what they are doing, we'll be alright over here.”

Some say they would like to see more jobs on the south side, good paying ones. Antoine Richardson, wants more jobs on south side. He said, “it's nice to see the construction of the homes... but we're looking for the long term situation. We need jobs that would sustain a person 5,6,7 years...Instead of building a house and the person is looking for a job all over again.”

Many recent college graduates are taking advantage of the new affordable housing, like these homes on medical commons court.

Where college students like Anitra Highland own their own homes, without having to move to another city. Anitra Highland, homeowner on south side, said, “I take care of my brothers and sisters, and I have a son so I needed some space. And this house was built from the ground up, so I got to pick what I wanted and how I wanted it.”

Residents can fill out the survey online on the county or city Web sites, it's open to any Tallahassee resident.

The city also plans to distribute hard copies of the survey throughout the community.
