Transfer Station Compliance

Leon County's trash transfer station is cleaning up its act after being cited last month by the State Department of Environmental Protection.

The citation was for "leachate", which is a liquid residue of garbage. DEP investigated after numerous complaints about "leachate" being tracked all over gum road.

DEP wrote the county a letter telling it to clean up the liquid up with in thirty days.

Edgar Grant, Leon County Director of Operations, says, "We had some concerns about tracking liquid leachate from the transfer building. What we've done is met with DEP and come up with a plan for review."

During the visit from DEP, the transfer station was also commended for what the department called "innovative ideas."

We did speak with some people living near the station who said they've had no problems or complaints.
