Bus Accident

Fire gutted a car and a school bus in an accident Monday morning south of Tallahassee. It all happened as the sun was rising.

The Florida Highway Patrol says an elderly woman heading southbound on Woodville Highway collided into a fully stopped school bus. The impact was fast enough to spark a fire under the hood of the car, which quickly spread to the bus.

The Leon County school district says only five students were on board along with a teachers aid and the bus driver. Everyone evacuated safely including the elderly driver.
The school district credits its evacuation drills for the lack of injuries.

FHP says the five elementary students on board the bus were taken to Woodville Elementary where their parents came to pick them up.

The elderly driver was taken to Capital Medical Regional Hospital with minor injuries, and the bus driver was sent home. He was complaining of back pain. Both vehicles are a total loss.

FHP did charge the elderly woman with careless driving. She told officers she didn't see the bus and thought the blinking lights were part of construction.

FHP says it will likely perform a re-examination of her driving skills.
