Fatal Crash at Moody Air Force

Our region is mourning the loss of two local Air Force pilots killed over the weekend in a crash in Savannah, Georgia.

We don't have any clue yet on what caused the crash that claimed two Air Force Reserve pilots from south Georgia. Right now, members of the 39 Flying Training Squadron are just trying to cope with the loss of two close friends.

The scene was near the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport on Saturday, following the crash of a T-6 Texan 2 training plane from Moody Air Force Base. On board, Captain Judson Brinson of Thomasville and Captain Lee Moore from Statesboro, Georgia.

Lt. Col. Stephen Winn, Commander of the 39th Flying Training Squadron, says, "I'd flown with each of these two men, and quiet honestly, had been impressed with both of them. Our squadron is a pretty tight bunch and our sympathies are with the families and friends Jud and Lee left behind and we county ourselves among them. I think we've seen the gamut of emotions, from disbelief to grief and anger."

The pilots are not alone in their grief. The entire region has been coming forward for several days, showing its support for all local airmen during this difficult time.

"Our prayers and thoughts go out to the families and to the squadron those guys were in," says Wade Hayes

While the airmen and the community continue to mourn the loss, an investigation panel is looking into what could have caused the accident on what was considered a routine training mission.

"They were doing instrument and navigation training and had landed in Savannah the day before, and took off Saturday morning in route for Valdosta for another training mission," says Lt. Col. Winn.

A special private memorial service is being planned to take place later this week at the base, but that service will be closed to the general public. The Air Force says this deadly accident if the first ever crash of a T-6 Texan two and training in the T-6 planes will continue at Moody.
