A long-time employee of the Leon County School District received a one-of-a-kind retirement party and the whole community came to celebrate.
The FAMU marching 100 was one of many groups in the parade who came to honor Willie Mae Footman. Footman, retiring on Friday, has been an instructional aide, volunteer, and friend at Kate Sullivan for more than 30 years.
"I did it from my heart and I just enjoy doing it. So I didn't expect anything and I just appreciate everything that they did for me," said Footman.
Students, faculty and administrators treated Footman like a queen for the day. Co-workers say Footman goes above and beyond on a daily basis to enrich the lives of children. Footman says she'll miss the kids the most, but she won't be too far. She's already volunteered herself to help with the book fair next week.
